Natural Memorials

To maintain the beautiful natural environment at Clayton Wood we offer a number of natural memorials instead of a traditional headstone. Stone, ceramic or metal markers are not permitted at the burial ground and all memorials must be approved and purchased through Clayton Wood.

Memorial Plaques

Graves for full natural burial or cremated remains can be marked with a single wooden plaque. These will biodegrade naturally over time but can be replaced if required. Made from English oak, the plaques are available to order in different sizes:

  • 8×2″
  • 8×4″
  • 8×8″
  • 8×9″
  • 8×12″

All memorials can be personalised with your loved one’s details and personal message.

Plaque care instructions

All our plaques are constructed from recycled or sustainably sourced oak.

They are delivered having been treated with two coats of Danish oil, a natural product that enhances the natural grain of the wood. Danish oil provides a barrier to the elements. It will need to be reapplied at regular intervals to maintain this barrier.

We recommend that you treat the plaque at least four times a year. This is important to adhere to before the winter months especially in very windy and wet conditions.

Wood, being a natural product, will always darken with age but can be rejuvenated with care and attention. A good exterior quality Danish oil should be applied with either a brush or cloth.

As in all wood products, natural imperfections (e.g. knots and residual shakes) may appear over time.

Plaques will only be replaced if the wood has cracked within the first year of purchase (guarantee period).

  • After the death of my 16 year old son arranging the funeral became my obsession. It had to be befitting for my ‘magnificent son’. Somewhere where I would want to return. Several options were…

A peaceful & beautiful resting place

  • My wife and I often discussed the merits of cremation or burial and eventually decided on burial-but the idea of churchyards with their rows of tombstones did not appeal, and most of the ones we had seen were derelict and overgrown. We both decided we would like a woodland burial, where from the afterlife, we could commune with nature. Over…
